What is Botox?Botox is a protein known as botulinum toxin, derived from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. This organism is found in the natural environment where it is largely inactive and non-toxic. Botox is a prescription-only medicine used for various cosmetic and medical purposes.
-
How does Botox work?Botox is injected using a fine needle into targeted muscles, temporarily blocking nerve signals. By stopping messages from the brain that tell facial muscles to contract, whether voluntary, automated, or emotional, Botox reduces the ability of these muscles to contract. This results in an improvement in the appearance of facial expression lines.
-
Is Botox safe?Yes, Botox is safe when administered in a clinical environment by a trained medical practitioner with a registered license to practice. Botulinum toxin treatments are highly effective, with millions of procedures performed worldwide and an excellent safety profile. There are no known long-term side effects from repeated Botox treatments, although muscle atrophy (muscle wasting) may occur over time. Always ensure your Botox treatments are conducted by a qualified professional to ensure safety and effectiveness.
-
Are Botox Injections Painful? At Dr David Aesthetics, we use very fine medical-grade needles to inject Botulinum toxin, minimizing discomfort. Most clients report that the sensation is similar to plucking an eyebrow. In rare cases where clients find the procedure uncomfortable, a numbing cream can be applied to the skin to reduce sensation before treatment.
-
What Does the Botox Procedure Involve?Prior to any Botox treatment at Dr David Aesthetics, you will have a thorough consultation. During this session, your motivations for treatment, medical history, and all relevant information about the procedure are discussed. This is also an opportunity for you to ask any questions and make an informed decision about whether to proceed. Typically, after the initial consultation, there is a cooling-off period, allowing you time to consider the information provided before booking the treatment at a later date. Before the procedure, you will sign a pre-treatment consent form, and Dr David will examine the area to determine the appropriate injection sites and dosages for optimal results. The actual Botox treatment usually takes between 10 to 15 minutes. During the procedure, you will lie on a couch while the treatment areas are cleaned and disinfected. Dr David will then examine the muscles, plan the treatment, mark the treatment areas, and inject the required dose into the targeted muscles. Immediately afterward, you may notice small raised bumps or blobs on the skin where the Botulinum toxin was injected, but these should resolve within an hour. How Long Do Cosmetic Treatment Effects Last?On average, the effects of cosmetic treatments last approximately 3 months. During this period, the nerve terminals recover, and movement gradually returns to the treated area. After this time, the treatment can be repeated. However, it is not advisable to repeat the treatment sooner than 3 months. Static lines, which are present at rest, may soften with injections and may continue to improve with repeated treatments. As the skin recovers and is no longer constantly creased by muscle action, these lines may benefit from additional treatments.
-
What Areas Can Be Treated with Cosmetic Procedures?Cosmetic procedures can address a variety of areas, including: Glabellar lines (frown lines) Lateral canthal lines (crow’s feet) Horizontal forehead lines Gummy smiles Bunny lines Smoker’s/lip lines Platysmal bands (Turkey neck) Jawline (Nefertiti lift) Slimming of jaw muscles Chin dimpling Brow lifting Excessive sweating (underarm) These treatments target different areas to address various concerns, providing options for individuals seeking cosmetic enhancements.
-
What Results Can I Expect from Cosmetic Procedures? The results of cosmetic procedures vary depending on individual factors such as muscle strength and metabolism. While the amount of movement left in the muscle is often dose-dependent, achieving complete "freezing" may not be possible or aesthetically desirable for everyone. Botulinum toxin is effective in treating dynamic lines, which appear during facial expressions, but it may be less effective in treating static lines, which are present when the face is at rest. In cases where static lines are not adequately addressed, alternative therapies may be discussed with Dr. David during consultation. It's important to note that the effects of treatment are not instant and may take up to 2 weeks to reach their peak. Dr. David offers face-to-face appointments 2 weeks after treatment to review the effects of treatment. While additional toxin administration at this time is not guaranteed, it may be considered if indicated based on the individual's response to treatment.
-
What are the possible side-effects?As a general rule, side effects are mild and usually resolve within a few days of treatment. Some, such as drooping of the eyelid or brow can take several weeks to recover. • Injection site pain • Bleeding and/or bruising at the injection sites • Redness, itching, irritation at the injection site • Swelling, including under eye puffiness • Headache, which may last several days • Nausea and/or hot flushes • Poor cosmetic results • Uneven effect on one side • Drooping or heaviness of the brow or eye lid • Abnormal appearance of the brows (Mephisto or Spock brow) • Blepharitis (inflammation of the eyelids) • Eye pain or visual disturbance • Parasthesia (abnormal sensation) • Muscle twitching • Flu-like symptoms • Anxiety • Rarely, muscle or joint pains
-
Am I Suitable for Cosmetic Treatment?Your suitability for cosmetic treatment depends on various factors, including the condition of your skin, its elasticity, and the presence of excessive facial expressions or static lines in the treatment area. Generally, the better the condition of your skin, the more successful the treatment is likely to be. However, you may not be suitable for treatment if any of the following apply: You are outside the recommended age range of 25-65 years, although exceptions may be made at the discretion of the practitioner. You are pregnant, breastfeeding, or actively trying to get pregnant. You have certain neurological disorders, such as myasthenia gravis. You are taking specific medications, including antibiotics like Clindamycin. You have experienced previous adverse reactions to botulinum toxin treatment. You have an active infection in or near the treatment area, including cold sores. You are unwell, including having coughs and colds, on the day of treatment. You are taking medications that affect bleeding, such as aspirin or warfarin. It's crucial to be honest about your medical history, previous surgeries, dental treatments, and medications with Dr. David to ensure safe and effective treatment.
-
Is there a rebound effect when Botox wears off?No. Muscles will return to their original strength once Botox wears off. However, with repeated treatments over a period of time atrophy, or wasting of the targeted muscle, may occur.
-
How Should I Prepare for a Cosmetic Treatment?Preparing for a cosmetic treatment involves several steps to ensure optimal results and minimise risks. Here's what you can do: Avoid Anti-inflammatory Medications: Refrain from taking anti-inflammatory medications like Aspirin, Ibuprofen, or Naproxen, unless prescribed by your doctor, for at least 3 days before the treatment. This helps reduce the risk of bleeding during the procedure. Limit Certain Substances: Avoid alcohol, fish oils, St John’s Wort, Gingko Biloba, garlic, and Vitamin E for 3 days prior to treatment. These substances can also increase the risk of bleeding. Consider Arnica: Taking arnica for 3 days before treatment may help reduce bruising. Reschedule if Unwell: If you feel unwell on the day of treatment, it's essential to contact Dr David to reschedule. It's important to undergo treatment when you're in good health to ensure safety and effectiveness. Update Medical History: Inform Dr David of any changes to your medical history or medication before the treatment. This information helps ensure that the treatment plan is tailored to your specific needs and health status. Plan Ahead: Avoid scheduling treatment within 2 weeks of an important social event or holiday. This allows sufficient time for any potential side effects, such as bruising, to settle, and provides an opportunity for a review appointment if needed. Following these guidelines can help you prepare effectively for your cosmetic treatment and achieve the best possible outcomes.

Post-Treatment Care for Optimal Results After Cosmetic ProceduresLooking for guidance on what to do after your cosmetic procedure? Following the right aftercare routine is crucial for optimal results and a smooth recovery. Here's a breakdown of key things to avoid in the first 24-48 hours after your treatment: Minimize Infection Risk: Avoid applying makeup for at least 12 hours. This allows the treatment area to heal and reduces the chance of infection. Respect the Treated Area: Resist the urge to touch or rub the treated area for 24 hours. This prevents disrupting the results and minimizes infection risk. Hold Off on Leisure Activities: Saunas, swimming pools, and sunbeds should be avoided until initial swelling and redness subside. Maintain a Balanced Temperature: Extreme heat, cold, and vigorous exercise are best avoided on the day of treatment. Reduce Bruising: Limit alcohol consumption for 48 hours after treatment to minimize bruising. Avoid Blood-Thinning Medications: Unless prescribed by your doctor, avoid taking anti-inflammatory medications like Aspirin, Ibuprofen, or Naproxen for 7 days post-treatment. These can increase bruising. Elevate Your Head: Sleeping with your head elevated for 6 hours after treatment can help reduce facial swelling. Hold Off on Further Facial Procedures: Wait at least 2 weeks before undergoing other facial procedures on the treated area. Remember, this is a general guide. Dr. David will provide you with comprehensive aftercare instructions specific to your procedure during your consultation. He's also always available to answer any questions you may have throughout the healing process. By following these aftercare tips, you'll be well on your way to a successful recovery and enjoying the long-lasting benefits of your cosmetic procedure.
